An evening of Ottawa Japanese community arts performances

Date/Time: Tuesday 12 November, 7:00 p.m.
Location: Woodside Hall, Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (355 Cooper St.)

COME ONE, COME ALL!!

The Ottawa Japanese arts community is trying something new! Join us for an evening of unique and exciting performances, in which local Japanese Canadian performing arts groups will collaborate for the first time with local musicians, video artists and dancers! Everyone is welcome to this free, all-ages show.

Minyo-kai, Odori (folk dance) group, will collaborate with the post-rock band Merganzer (Mika Posen), blending its gracious movements with Merganzer’s haunting melodies.

Melody of Japan, Ottawa’s Japanese Women’s Choir, will perform live while VJ Lesley Marshall projects and manipulates a live video backdrop.

Contemporary dancer Takako Segawa (Corpus Dance Company) will interpret the karaoke singing of Ottawa’s original Karaoke Club members David Okura and Sayoko Konno.

But wait, there’s more! It will be our great pleasure to share with you a selection of tsukemono or Japanese pickles – free of charge! Local Japanese chef Emi Buzza will give a brief talk on the history and techniques of tsukemono. Freshly cooked rice provided by the Embassy of Japan in Canada will be served with the tsukemono.

How Japanese Canadians Shaped the Constitution

The following event is taking place in Toronto.

A PRESENTATION OF THE TORONTO CHAPTER OF THE NAJC

This past September 22^nd was the 31st Anniversary of Redress. Hurrah! In this spirit we invite you to attend a lecture “How Japanese Canadians Shaped the Constitution” by Dr. Eric Adams, Professor of Law, University of Alberta on Thursday, November 7, 2019 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Don’t wait to save your seat at Alumni Hall 400, University of Toronto, 121 St. Joseph Street (corner Queen’s Park) as we are already near to half of our target and will soon release tickets to the general public.

Like the classic works on Japanese Canadian history; “The Enemy That Never Was” by Ken Adachi and the “Politics of Racism” by Ann Gomer Sunahara, this lecture is a game-changer for Japanese Canadians. Whether you need to be convinced of the rationale for B.C. Redress or you would like to be better informed of JC history you will learn much about how the old boys legal and political network of British Columbia was stacked against those with the courage to assert the rights of Japanese Canadians citizens.

Dr. Adams will be introduced by Justice Maryka Omatsu, Co-chair of the BC Redress Steering Committee.

Tickets $5.00; Complimentary for Toronto NAJC members, but you must reserve a ticket.

Please refer to the Toronto NAJC site for further information.

About “Leadership Lessons for Life”

How do you motivate people to do things they might not like doing? How do you identify someone who is helpful versus an enabler? Can you really learn from your mistakes? What should you do if you are being badly led?

These are some questions that Brigadier-General Steve Moritsugu has tackled in his 36 year career in the Canadian Armed Forces. They are questions that are relevant not only to a commander in the military, but for any leader or future leader, in any sector and of any size of group.

Moritsugu is a passionate mentor and believes in “working together, and sharing information and experience”. He wishes to provide leaders with “every opportunity to reach out and learn from people who have ‘been there and done that.’” Come listen and learn from his experience.
